How we doing Hartford County!? Today is Tuesday September 23rd - aka Great American Pot Pie Day, and frankly, that’s a holiday we can get behind. Flaky crust, cozy filling, zero notes. Consider this your permission slip to celebrate the most lovable dinner in America: grab a fork, preheat the oven, and lean into the comfort. Because we’re the Nutmeg State, we went the extra mile: below you’ll find a Connecticut-inspired pot pie recipe (think cider, sharp white cheddar, and a whisper of nutmeg) that’s weeknight-simple and wildly good. Make it tonight, stash one for the freezer, and thank us when your kitchen smells like fall at a farm stand.

HIVE PICK: CHARITY OF THE WEEK

Hands On Hartford is one of those “quietly huge” Hartford orgs, founded in 1969 (back then as Center City Churches) and still showing up daily for neighbors who need food, housing, and health support. On any given week you’ll see the team running a shopping-model Community Pantry, hot Community Meals, a Day Program that connects folks to housing and services, plus supportive housing for residents with complex health needs. It’s pragmatic, human, and effective.
Receipts? Their 2024 impact tallies are eye-popping: 1,400+ volunteers donated 19,500 hours, 17,650 no-cost meals were served, 605,000 lbs of food moved through their programs, and staff logged 3,800 navigation services to help people stabilize. Bonus: their pay-what-you-can restaurant Gather55 (at 55 Bartholomew Ave) lets full-price diners effectively underwrite meals for neighbors; community building, but make it dinner. If you want a Hartford win you can actually measure, this is it.

HART CO TRIVIA🤔
Which Hartford County town was originally part of Windsor before breaking off in 1636?

NUTMEG STATE POT PIE WITH CHEDDAR BISCUIT TOP
Ingredients (serves 4-6)
3 cups shredded rotisserie chicken (or turkey)
2 Tbsp butter + 1 Tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, 2 carrots, 2 celery stalks - diced
8 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional but great)
1 tsp chopped fresh sage, ½ tsp dried thyme
¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg (go light - just a hint)
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup apple cider (not vinegar)
1½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
½ cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
1 cup frozen peas, salt & pepper
Cheddar-Chive Biscuit Top
1¼ cups flour, 2 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt
4 Tbsp cold butter, cubed
½ cup shredded sharp white cheddar
2 Tbsp chopped chives
¾ cup buttermilk (or milk + squeeze of lemon)
Optional brush: 1 Tbsp melted butter + 1 tsp maple syrup
Directions
Heat oven to 425°F. In a large ovenproof skillet, sauté onion, carrots, celery in butter/oil 6-8 min; add mushrooms 3 min. Stir in sage, thyme, nutmeg, salt/pepper.
Sprinkle in ¼ cup flour; cook 1 min. Whisk in cider, then broth; simmer 3-4 min till slightly thick. Stir in cream, chicken, peas. Taste and adjust.
Biscuits: Mix dry ingredients, cut in butter to pebble-size, fold in cheddar/chives, then buttermilk. Drop 8-10 mounds over filling.
Bake 18-22 min until biscuits are golden and filling bubbles. Brush tops with maple butter if using. Rest 10 min.
CT twists: add sweet corn in summer, swap turkey after Thanksgiving, or a splash more cider for extra orchard vibes.

BUZZWORTHY ACTIVITY🐝
PandaFest (9/27 & 9/28) is 2 days of Hartford turning the riverfront into a street-food theme park. Picture bao in one hand, skewers in the other, and a soundtrack of K-pop and cultural performances bouncing off the water at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza (300 Columbus Blvd). It’s one of those eat-your-way-through-the-day situations where “I’ll just try a bite” becomes a full tour of noodles, dumplings, and bubble tea you swear you don’t even like until you’ve crushed two. Bring friends who share well, wear forgiving pants, and pace yourself. If you leave hungry, that’s on you.

FORGED IN STEEL:
HOW COLLINS COMPANY BUILT COLLINSVILLE
If last week’s word scramble had you scratching your head with “Collins Company,” here’s the backstory: from one little mill in 1826, Collins grew into a global blade-making juggernaut, so big the town renamed itself Collinsville. Powered by dams on the Farmington River and a railroad line they literally bribed into town, the factory cranked out 1,300+ styles of axes, picks, and blades that shaped everything from the Gold Rush to the Trans-Siberian Railroad.
At its peak, the company pumped out 100 plowshares a day, supplied Peary’s North Pole expedition, and sold a million machetes to the U.S. military in WWII. After 140 years of sharp steel and industrial muscle, the factory closed in 1966, leaving behind the stone dam, historic buildings, and a museum reminder that Collinsville was once the cutting edge of Connecticut industry.
