How we doing Hartford County!?

Today is Tuesday, May 12th, aka National Limerick Day, because apparently even five-line nonsense deserves its own holiday.

I searched around for a good local writer with a Hartford County limerick and came up pretty empty, so I did the responsible thing and wrote one myself. Please don’t hold it against me, I am a newsletter guy, not a poet.

In Today’s Hart Co Buzz:

  • Local Limerick

  • Let’s Learn Mahjong

  • Farm Guide

  • Buzz & Tell

  • Celebrate New Britain

  • 50+ Local Events

Let’s dive in!

-Todd DiGiovanni

There once was a reader of HartCo Buzz,
Who swore they were staying in, just because.
Then the events hit their phone,
Now they’re never at home,
And they blame all their plans on us.

LET’S LEARN MAHJONG

Alright, tile people. Our first Let’s Learn Mahjong event is officially set for June 3rd at 6pm in Glastonbury, and it’s a 2-hour beginner class taught by professional teachers who actually know what all those little tiles are doing.

You’ll learn the original Chinese version of Mahjong, which gives you the foundation to move into American Mahjong later, while also looking slightly cooler than your peers because you learned the official game first. Only 40 seats are available, first come first served.

Once you’re signed up, we’ll reach out with the exact location details and anything else you need to know before class. If demand is strong enough, we’ll try to set up another date.

FARM FIELD GUIDE

Farm season is back in full swing, which means Hartford County is about to smell like fresh dirt, strawberries, cut flowers, and your sudden urge to buy eggs from someone named Linda.

I put together a guide with 37 working farms across Hartford County, covering everything from fresh produce and fruit to PYO, pasture-raised meats, handmade soaps, and freshly cut flowers. Basically, if it grew, mooed, bloomed, or was lovingly made in a barn-adjacent situation, there’s a good chance it’s in here.

Take a look, and if I missed a farm that deserves to be included, reply and let me know.

BUZZ & TELL

🐶Adopt-a-pal: Meet Snowball, a 6-month-old, 12-pound Spaniel mix with marshmallow-level fluff, pro-level cuddle skills, and the kind of tiny prancing energy that should probably be illegal.

🏡House of the week: This 1939 ridgeline estate comes with 5 fireplaces, a wine cellar, fruit trees, gardens, and a carriage barn apartment with 5-car storage. Add in the winding drive, circular motor court, marble bath, and Gaggenau/Wolf/Sub-Zero kitchen, and this place is less “house” and more “old-money movie set with better appliances.” Check it out!

🥾Trail of the week: MDC West Hartford Reservoir — West Hartford 3,000 acres of watershed land with 30+ miles of trail wrapping six reservoirs - the most-used trail network in greater Hartford that you've somehow never read about here. The 6-mile paved loop around Reservoir 6 is the headliner (runners, road bikes, strollers all welcome), but the real magic is the dirt singletrack and fire roads branching into Talcott Mountain. Park at 1420 Farmington Ave. Free, year-round, leashed pups on designated days. Tag us in your trail pics.

🔭Sky report: This week’s sky report is worth the neck tilt: Mars, Saturn, and a skinny crescent moon show up before sunrise early in the week. Then the sky goes dark around the New Moon on Saturday, May 16, making the weekend a solid one for backyard stargazing without the moon stealing the spotlight.

FEATURED EVENT

Celebrate New Britain

Celebrate New Britain brings the whole “let’s make Main Street fun again” package with vendors, live music, sweet treats, local food, family activities, and enough going on that your casual “I’ll just stop by for a bit” may become three hours and a snack-related financial decision. Big local energy, very worth a wander.
