What’s up Hartford County!? Today is August 5th and National Oyster Day, which is basically a green light to slurp briny little money-makers and call it culture. Oysters are the ultimate ROI: high protein, low calories, rumored aphrodisiac, plus they come with built-in shot glasses. Dress ’em up with mignonette, go feral with hot sauce, or keep it buck-naked and let the ocean do the talking. Grab a dozen, post the tray, pretend you’re coastal elite for 12 minutes, and then order another round because self-care.

BUZZ & TELL

🐶Adopt-a-pal: Meet Caden, a 4-month-old Great Pyrenees mix. Dog and kid-friendly, leash-ready, and built for big cuddles

🏡House of the week: Live like Gilded Age royalty in the Charles Cheney Mansio; 8 beds, 6 baths, koi pond, and nine garage bays sprawled across 5+ manicured acres. Have a look!

🥾Trail of the week: Talcott Mountain Tower Trail (560 Simsbury Rd) in Bloomfield: A 1.25-mile, 30-minute uphill stroll (~430 ft gain) drops you at the 165-ft Heublein Tower for Hartford-to-Berkshires panoramas; dog-friendly, fee-free, and shaded enough to keep the August sun tame.

🔭Sky report: Perseid preview with the best show overnight Aug 12-13 (pre-dawn), but a bright waning gibbous Moon (~85–88% lit) will knock rates down to ~15-30 meteors/hr vs. the usual 60–100. For Hartford County, go after 1 a.m., face NE from a dark spot, and block the Moon with trees or a building for better contrast.

HART CO TRIVIA🤔

BUZZWORTHY ACTIVITY🐝

Hartford’s West Indian Independence Celebration Parade is a full-on vibe check for the city. Bands and masqueraders roll out at 12 PM from Albany and Main by the Keney Memorial Clock Tower, then wind their way to Bushnell Park with soca, reggae, and dancehall thumping from flatbed trucks. Color, culture, and big energy from start to finish.

Once they hit the park, the party levels up. Two stages run in Bushnell Park, with a concert starting at 3PM and a separate judging stage in Carnival Village. Grab food, browse crafts, and soak up the sound while bands chase bragging rights and trophies.
